Ameren Illinois Joins with Local Communities to Brighten Neighborhoods in Central and Southern Illinois
“Brighten the Block” initiative replaces old porchlights with LEDs; promotes safety and energy efficiency
An Ameren Illinois volunteer and a local police officer exchange porch lights in Canton, Illinois, as part of the company’s Brighten the Block initiative.

Ameren Illinois partnered with local volunteers to replace standard incandescent lightbulbs with LED bulbs on the front porches of more than 700 homes in several communities across the Ameren Illinois service territory.  The company’s inaugural “Brighten the Block” initiative brought together local municipal officials, first responders, neighborhood organizations and local residents to promote neighborhood safety and energy efficiency.

LED bulbs are brighter, use less energy and last longer than incandescent bulbs. Residents who received new LED bulbs can now create a safer environment by turning on their porch lights after dark without worrying about burning out their bulbs as frequently.

Participants in each event gathered beforehand for a short safety briefing and then divided into teams to exchange bulbs at houses along specific walking routes. Volunteers left packaged LED bulbs for residents who were not at home during the event. The exchange areas were chosen by city officials or the local police department.

“We are thrilled to work hand-in-hand with community leaders across our service territory on such an impactful project,” said Richard J. Mark, President of Ameren Illinois. “The safety of both our customers and our employees is of the utmost importance. Brighten the Block is one way we're working together to make local neighborhoods safer, while helping our customers experience the benefits of energy efficiency.”

Ameren Illinois held Brighten the Block events in the following communities:

  • Alton
  • Lincoln
  • Belleville
  • Mount Vernon
  • Canton
  • Quincy
  • Galesburg
