Ameren encourages customers to conserve energy during extended heat wave

ST. LOUIS (Aug. 24, 2023) – The regional grid operator, Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), is forecasting high energy needs today. To lessen the strain on the grid and ensure safe and reliable service, Ameren is encouraging its customers to take steps to use energy conservatively and efficiently.

“There is currently enough energy available to cover our customers' energy needs,” said Shawn Schukar, chairman and president of Ameren Transmission Company. “By taking proactive steps now, we can help our neighbors and communities across Missouri and Illinois stay safe in this dangerous heat.”

Customers should keep safe by using their air conditioning, but Ameren suggests they consider taking these actions today:

  • Raise the temperature on your thermostat by a few degrees.
  • Close curtains and blinds. Use curtains and blinds to block out direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the afternoon. Keeping curtains and drapes closed can help reduce the heat indoors by 33%.
  • Defer appliance usage. Wait to run your dishwasher, washing machine or any high-energy appliances until after 10 p.m. tonight.

If customers do not have a cool place to stay, visit a cooling center or public space for a break to help you stay safe until temperatures cool. Click to learn more about cooling centers in Missouri and Illinois.
