Break the Ice, Not Your Service: Be Sure to Clear Natural Gas Meters After Snow Falls

Clearing snow and ice from meters and vents helps ensure safe service

COLUMBIA, Mo. (Jan. 26, 2026) – With significant snowfall across the region, Ameren is reminding customers to take a few simple steps to help protect their homes and families by keeping outdoor natural gas meters and vents clear of snow and ice.

Snow and ice buildup can damage equipment and, if vents become blocked, may allow unsafe levels of natural gas or carbon monoxide to build up inside a home. Clearing these areas after a storm helps ensure natural gas equipment can operate safely when customers need it most.

“We know winter storms can be stressful, and our customers count on us to deliver safe, reliable energy through all kinds of weather,” said Pam Harrison, senior director of gas operations at Ameren Missouri. “Taking a few minutes to gently clear snow and ice from meters and vents is a simple step that can make a real difference in keeping your home safe and warm as we weather the storm.”

When removing snow and ice near natural gas meters, Ameren offers the following guidance:

  • Use your hands or a broom to gently remove snow and ice. Do not use shovels or snowblowers, which can damage equipment or loosen a connection.
  • Carefully remove large icicles hanging directly above meter assemblies or vents.
  • If a meter is completely encased in ice, do not try to chip or melt it. This could damage the meter. Allow the ice to melt naturally.

If you smell natural gas or suspect a leak, leave the area immediately, taking all people and pets with you. Once you are at a safe distance, call Ameren at 1.800.552.7583. Ameren responds to natural gas leak calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and there is never a charge to customers for investigating a suspected natural gas leak.
