Ameren Missouri reminds customers in southeast Missouri to be on the watch for scams

ST. LOUIS (March 25, 2026) – Ameren Missouri is reminding customers to remain alert after a handful of businesses in the Dexter area reported being contacted by individuals falsely claiming to represent Ameren and threatening planned outages or service disconnections.

“While we’re grateful there were not many reports from our customers, it definitely provides a good reminder for everyone in southeast Missouri to stay vigilant with these types of scams and be familiar with how Ameren Missouri reaches out to customers,” said Carlos Ross, security manager for Ameren.  “We want our customers to know the tactics these sophisticated scammers use and how to report them.”

Ameren Missouri does not call, text or email customers to demand immediate payment; threaten instant disconnection; or request payment through prepaid cards, wire transfers or payment apps. Planned outages and service‑related notifications are communicated through customer bill messages, mailed notices, text alerts, email notifications, or recorded phone messaging. When in doubt, customers should reach out to Ameren to verify any communication they suspect may be a scam.

Customers who receive a suspicious call, message or in-person visit from someone claiming to represent Ameren should not share personal or financial information. Instead, customers should end the interaction and contact Ameren Missouri directly, using the phone number listed on their bill or by visiting Ameren.com to confirm their account status.

Anyone who believes they may have been targeted by a scam is also encouraged to report the incident to local law enforcement.
