Simple Steps Can Help Residents Be More Energy Efficient at Home

ST. LOUIS (April 16, 2026) – Spring is an ideal time to prepare for warmer temperatures and optimize energy use. Practical, easy-to-follow energy efficiency options can help residents stay comfortable while managing costs, whether by adjusting smart thermostat settings, improving home ventilation or preparing heating and cooling systems for the months ahead.

Spring Energy Efficiency Options for Missouri and Illinois Homes

As warmer weather arrives, Ameren customers can take advantage of opportunities that can help lower monthly bills. From simple seasonal tips to personalized tools and cost saving efficiency programs, customers have a menu of options to make smart energy choices at home:

  • Utilize your smart thermostat – Schedule your smart thermostat to raise and lower the temperature in your home so you are not wasting energy while you are away. Stay comfortable and lower your energy usage.
  • Switch your fans – If you changed the direction of your ceiling fans to go clockwise this winter, it’s time to switch them back. When your fans rotate counterclockwise, it creates a downward flow of air, so you feel cooler.
  • Check your filters – Your air conditioner will operate best with strong air flow through the system, so replace your AC filter before you start cooling your home.
  • Open your windows – Take advantage of cool spring nights by opening the windows at night to let the cool air in, then closing them during the day to keep the warm air out.

“Spring is the perfect time for customers to take small steps that lead to meaningful benefits over time,” said Pat Justis, director of energy efficiency for Ameren Illinois. “Whether they’re using our personalized tools to identify rebates and discounts or receiving home energy assessments, we’re committed to offering easy, affordable ways for families across Illinois and Missouri to improve comfort and reduce energy costs.”
