Ameren offers simple ways to save energy and manage bills during unusually high September heat

ST. LOUIS (Sept. 18, 2026) – With unseasonably hot September temperatures driving up energy usage, Ameren is encouraging its Missouri and Illinois customers to use energy conservatively and efficiently. Simple steps, such as raising the thermostat a few degrees or using certain appliances later in the evening, can help reduce electric demand and save on monthly bills.

Ameren has prepared for higher-than-normal energy use by postponing some scheduled equipment and facility maintenance and maximizing available power generation. In the event of system capacity issues, some high-usage customers have also agreed to reduce their load to help maintain service reliability.

Ameren encourages residential customers to take these actions during extreme heat:

  • Temporarily raise the household thermostat by a few degrees. 
  • Unplug electronic devices and turn off lights when not needed.
  • Use certain household appliances – such as laundry and dishwashing machines – between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.  
  • Block heat from entering the home. Close blinds or curtains during the hottest parts of the day to reduce indoor heat gain and keep cooler air inside.  
  • Use fans to help circulate cool air. Ceiling fans and portable fans can help rooms feel cooler and allow customers to raise thermostat settings while maintaining comfort.
