21st Annual Spring Shoreline Cleanup Set to Begin
This year’s event is March 17 through April 15

Preparations are underway for the 2012 Spring Shoreline Cleanup at the Lake of the Ozarks. It will be held March 17 through April 15. With cleanup activities set to begin in just a few days, the Adopt-the-Shoreline organization is extending an invitation to businesses, residents, second homeowners and vacationers to participate.

Bryan Vance, coordinator for Adopt-the-Shoreline, which organizes the annual event, expects more than 800 volunteers, representing 60 Adopt-the-Shoreline member groups, to participate this year. He emphasized that more boats and volunteers are always welcomed and needed to help make the cleanup a success.

“Last year, we had a record number of volunteer groups participate in the spring and fall cleanups,” Vance said. “As a result, they are reporting a much cleaner Lake of the Ozarks. Thanks to the ban on non-encapsulated foam, our volunteers are no longer motoring along the shore looking for discarded dock foam. They have started walking the shoreline, removing the smaller trash that accumulates each season. In the past, an adopting group may have needed an entire dumpster for their shoreline debris. Now, they may need only five or six bags. What a great success story.”

Adopt-the-Shoreline is sponsored by Ameren Missouri, which provides administrative support, supplies trash bags, and pays for disposal, and the cleanups are performed entirely by volunteers.

For more information or to volunteer, contact a zone coordinator to locate the zone you would like to work. The Adopt-the-Shoreline office can be reached at 573.365.9252.
