Lower wholesale electricity costs equal savings for many Ameren Illinois customers
Reduced rates take effect June 1

Many Ameren Illinois customers will pay less for electricity beginning June 1 as a result of a reduction in the wholesale price of electricity.

It is estimated the new rates for electricity – shown as the “Electric Supply” charge on bills – will mean a typical residential customer who uses 10,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually will save approximately $107 per year. Electricity usage is measured in kilowatt-hours.

“This is very good news for all of our customers,” said Ameren Illinois President & CEO Richard J. Mark. “Those who purchase their electricity through a retail electric supplier as well as those who get their electric supply from Ameren Illinois are benefitting from lower electric supply costs.”

Under state law, Ameren Illinois customers and those of other investor-owned utilities may choose their supplier of electricity. Ameren Illinois residential customer options include retail electric suppliers, hourly pricing through Power Smart Pricing and the Ameren Illinois Basic Generation Supply (BGS). Where approved, customers also may participate in a local government electricity supply aggregation program.

The Ameren Illinois BGS is obtained as follows: The Illinois Power Agency (IPA) procures the electricity through a competitive process on behalf Ameren Illinois. This process operates under Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) oversight. BGS electricity is sold to customers without any markup in price. About two-thirds of a typical residential customer’s bill is the actual cost of electricity and transmission charges.
