Adopt-the-Shoreline representatives at the Lake of the Ozarks said the 23rd Annual Spring Shoreline Cleanup is off to a great start. Hundreds of volunteers have already turned out to participate during the first two weeks of this year’s cleanup event, which began March 15.
Adopt-the-Shoreline is sponsored by Ameren Missouri, which provides administrative support, supplies trash bags and pays for disposal of debris and trash. The program is part of Ameren Missouri's continuing commitment as a responsible steward of the Lake and environment. Cleanups are performed entirely by volunteers, who canvass 12 geographic zones along the Lake. This year’s event continues through April 13.
Bryan Vance, coordinator of Adopt-the-Shoreline, expects more than 500 volunteers, representing 60 Adopt-the-Shoreline member groups, to participate in cleanup efforts. Even with the strong start, he said more boats and volunteers are always welcomed and needed to make the event a continued success.
“In August, we had significant flooding that deposited a large volume of trash along the Lake’s shoreline,” Vance said. “Adopting groups that have already completed their spring cleanup are walking extra miles of shoreline to ensure that trash is removed. Covering 500 miles of shoreline is no easy task. It’s fulfilling to see the high level of dedication that our volunteers are bringing to this important cause. They have that 'can-do' attitude, which is the hallmark of the cleanup. No doubt, the opportunity to work with such a committed group of people is the highlight of my job.”
Adopt-the-Shoreline began in 1994 with nine civic clubs adopting 89 miles of shoreline. Today, it includes more than 90 businesses, organizations and individual property owners, who have adopted more than 700 miles of shoreline between Bagnell Dam and Truman Dam.
