Companion Joins AmerenUE’s Pure Power Program

AmerenUE’s Pure Power announced today that Companion has agreed to support the development of new renewable energy sources via the purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) through the Pure Power program.

Companion’s commitment to this voluntary program will help prevent more than 86 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), a leading greenhouse gas, from entering the atmosphere each year. This is equal to the CO2 reduction provided by taking 16 cars off the road for a year.

Pure Power is UE’s voluntary renewable energy program and the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2008 New Green Power Program of the Year Award Winner. It gives residential customers the option to add an extra 1.5 cents/kilowatthour to their monthly bills, offsetting 100 percent of their energy usage with clean, renewable energy. Commercial and industrial customers, like Companion, participate by buying “blocks” of Pure Power, paying an additional $15 a month for each 1,000 kilowatt-hours used. Residential customers also have the option to purchase blocks of Pure Power. Pure Power funds are then used to purchase Renewable Energy Certificates from Green-e Energy-certified wind farms and other types of renewable energy projects.

Companion’s purchase of 120 blocks of Pure Power annually makes it a UE Pure Power Platinum Leader--a designation reserved for companies, governments or other large users of electricity who agree offset at least 20% percent of their energy usage through Pure Power purchases.

“Pure Power makes so much sense to me on so many levels,” said Josh Allen, Owner. “At Companion, we are deeply focused on sustainability as it relates to all aspects of our business – reducing our carbon footprint is a big piece.”

To celebrate their commitment to renewable energy, all three Companion locations will host Pure Power Windy Wednesdays beginning on October 21. Companion customers who come in for lunch will have the opportunity to learn more about Pure Power and enter to win wind-power themed gifts. Any customer who enrolls at these times will receive a limited edition Pure Power - P.U.R.E.* Companion organic cotton T-shirt.
