AmerenUE is warning customers of a scam in which con artists posing as UE customer service representatives are calling customers in an effort to obtain credit card data. Any customer who has received such a call should contact UE at 1-800-552-7583.
According to reports UE has received, callers claiming to be UE employees are telling customers that their account is “past due” by a small amount—usually $15 or $16—and that the customer will be disconnected if the amount is not paid that day. The scammers then ask the customer to provide a credit card number or checking account data to avoid the disconnection.
UE advises customers that it does not call delinquent customers requesting credit card or bank account data. In addition, it would be very unusual for UE to disconnect anyone for such a low amount owed.
Customers who have given out such information are advised to cancel their credit card, notify their bank, and call local police.
AmerenUE, founded in 1902, provides electric and gas service to approximately 1.2 million customers across central and eastern Missouri, including the greater St. Louis area. UE serves 57 Missouri counties and 500 towns. The company's electric rates are among the lowest in the nation. For more information, visit www.ameren.com.
